Legal Service Providers

One type of case that is commonly mediated at our center is between landlords and their tenants. These disputes involve security deposits, unpaid rent etc. If you are involved in this type of dispute, helpful landlord/tenant information and resources can be found by clicking on the link below (you can also download the residential landlord/tenant handbook there too). http://hawaii.gov/dcca/areas/ocp/landlord_tenant/

Due to the economic recession, we have experienced a rise in cases referred to mediation over credit card debt and other consumer/merchant disputes. If you are experiencing debt management problems, you may want to visit the website of the Consumer Credit Counseling Services of Hawai'i, a nonprofit organization that provides credit counseling services for fees that range from $20 - $65. http://www.cccsofhawaii.org/

Mediation is an accessible and affordable alternative to court for resolving a variety of conflicts and disputes. If, however, you find yourself in need of more complex legal advice/representation but do not understand the legal system and/or cannot afford an attorney, there are organizations that can help: Volunteer Legal Services of Hawai'i http://www.vlsh.org/ provides free or affordable legal help to low-income residents and nonprofit organizations statewide. The Legal Aid Society of Hawai'i http://www.legalaidhawaii.org/ also provides access to justice for those who cannot otherwise afford it.

Many disputes are rooted in cultural differences among neighbors, business partners, in rental arrangements and financial transactions. From time to time, we even need to use an interpreter for participants whose first language is not English. For many, the legal system can be difficult to understand and access. This is especially true for those who immigrated from another country, aren't fluent in English and have limited financial resources. The Hawai'i Immigrant Justice Center http://www.hijcenter.org/ is an organization that provides legal services and advice to the State's indigent immigrant population.
